A dragonfly flew into the kitchen the minute before we went on the air last week! Don’t you love the way the Universe works? Dragonfly medicine suggests a time of change. At Own It, Sister!, we’re heeding the call. Even though we have close to 40,000 subscribers, we’re each responding to a deep impulse to go into the chrysalis, melt into the imago and connect deeply to our “it”. This show will be our last weekly podcast for a while. We’re letting go of the format and structure we’ve so enjoyed over this last year. It’s unexpected and uncomfortable – but imagine how the caterpillar feels when the change comes upon it. One minute it’s munching away on delicious leaves; the next it feels itself starting to dissolve.

The three of us, individually and as a collective, are walking our talk (literally) and “owning it”. Sarah will be walking the Celtic Camino beginning September 29. Jeanie will be integrating the path of the householder yogini and teaching at her home studio, Anjaneya Yoga Shala. Whitney will be translating the macroeconomic picture with an emphasis on the practical in her Money Moxie blog — an interesting and enticing read even for the economic-and-financially phobic. Own It, Sister! will be like the chrysalis, holding us as we come to know and express ourselves in a more true and aligned way.

This week we talk with Diane Israel, psychotherapist and professor of human development at Naropa University, about her autobiographical documentary, Beauty Mark: Body Image and The Race for Perfection. This deeply personal and funny film asks some tough questions … How do our families influence our relationships with our own bodies? How do popular culture “standards” get inside of our hearts and heads? In what ways can sports actually make us sicker instead of healthier? An elite runner and triathlete until age 28, Diane retired from competition after collapsing from anorexia (sometimes called “athletic bulimia”, a disorder many athletes suffer from, but which few experts knew anything about at that time). We pre-recorded this interview and are excited to share Diane’s candor, authenticity and wisdom with you.

Our pervasive, modern media uses sex to sell everything imaginable while dramatically limiting people’s understanding of what sex is really all about. People get little, accurate information that helps them have better sex or successful intimate relationships.

As women, we can’t step into our full feminine power without a more complete understanding our own, fabulous anatomy. It may surprise you to learn that our accepted cultural ideas and images of genitals are missing a lot of really good stuff. Our guest, Sheri Winston, sex teacher and Founder / Executive Director of the Center for the Intimate Arts, is on a mission to change that and create a culture that celebrates sex as our vital life force, a source of ecstasy, and the glue and lubricant of delicious intimate relationships. She’s the author of Women’s Anatomy of Arousal: Secret Maps to Buried Pleasure and is one of the country’s most respected teachers about sex and sexuality. Her specialized knowledge is derived in large measure from her two-decade career as a certified nurse-midwife and gynecological practitioner. This conversation will completely change the way you think about and inhabit your body!
